"This Changes Everything:" Job Costing with LMN

(Read all about the v1.0 product here.)

The Problem:
Users of LMN were making great use of its powerful estimating, invoicing, and time tracking tools, but heading into the year 2022, they still couldn't compare the amounts of time and resources estimated for a job, with what was actually consumed on site.

The Work: To deliver a job costing tool that could beat our competitors on both accuracy and usability, I deployed a wide range of discovery and ideation tactics that included:
  • Preparing and delivering a Competitive Analysis report-out so that internal teams could better understand our competitors' offerings.
  • Conducting problem exploration user interviews and, after the project had entered design/development stages, facilitating prototype feedback interviews conducted in concert with the User Experience team. Qualitative data gathered in this fashion was processed in Dovetail and presented to all internal teams working on the Job Costing project.
  • Working directly with the Chief Product Officer and Chief Technology Officer to ensure that a scope shifting due to time constraints, continued to meet the most compelling use cases that were unearthed during discovery activities.
The Outcome: Job Costing v1.0 was launched in January 2023 to tremendously positive feedback from LMN customers of various business sizes -- helping LMN to achieve a double-digit increase in its Net Promoter Score (NPS) during Q1 and Q2 of 2023.

Fully aware of scope tradeoffs that had to be made in order to launch v1.0 prior to the start of the 2023 landscaping season, the Product team maintained a constant dialogue with customers, by year end, were able to ship two major improvements to the Job Costing platform: QuickBooks Sync for Vendor Bills, and the powerful aggregate job costing view that was released as part of the LMN Analytics release that September.
